Course Description

Preparing to Work in Schools

Content & Overview:
Are you thinking about working in a school setting but not sure where to start? This course is the perfect introduction.

The NCFE Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools is designed to give you a solid understanding of what it’s like to support teaching and learning in a school environment. Whether you're looking for a new career or want to build confidence before progressing to a Level 2 qualification, this course will help you take those first steps.

During the course, you'll explore topics such as:

• How schools are organised and what roles people play
• How to communicate effectively with children and adults
• Health and safety in a school setting
• Safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and young people

You’ll take part in group discussions, activities, and guided learning to help you build your knowledge and confidence. There’s no requirement to be working in a school while studying, so it’s ideal if you’re looking to get started.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a clearer idea of whether working in a school is the right path for you — and you’ll be ready to move on to further training or volunteer opportunities.

Suitable for:
Anyone thinking about working in a school setting. While not compulsory, we recommend GCSE grade C/4 in English (and sometimes maths) to support assignment work.

Entry Requirements:
You don’t need any previous qualifications or experience to join this course — just an interest in working with children and a willingness to learn. It’s a great starting point if you're thinking about a career in a school setting or want to build your confidence before progressing to a Level 2 qualification. We do recommend that you have a good level of English to get the most out of the course, as you'll be taking part in discussions and written activities.

Delivery Method:
Blended – You will attend 4 face to face sessions at the Ironstone Centre, Scunthorpe, DN15 6HX.

Remaining course materials will be accessed on Google Classroom. You are expected to complete three written assignments at a time convenient to you to meet the deadlines. You will also be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP).

Units:

• Understand Schools as Organisations - You'll learn about the different types of schools, their structures, and the roles of various staff members.

• Understand How to Keep Children and Young People Healthy, Safe and Well - This unit covers key safeguarding principles, health and safety, and how to support the wellbeing of children and young people.

• Understand How to Communicate with Children, Young People and Adults - You’ll explore how to communicate effectively and appropriately with children, young people, and adults in a school setting

Progression Route:

• NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning

• Volunteer or apply for school-based roles, such as classroom assistant or lunchtime supervisor

• Study related courses, such as safeguarding, behaviour management, or special educational needs (SEN)
