Course Description
Content & Overview The course enables you
to improve your English skills if you do not have a GCSE grade 4 (or A*- C
grade). The units you will cover include:
- • developing reading skills
- • reading to understand and interpret texts
- • responding to creative texts
- • essential writing skills
- • constructing sentences
- • composing texts
- • listening and responding to others
- • participating in discussions
The length of the course is individually determined following an
initial assessment of your skills and abilities at the beginning of the
programme.

Tutors are experienced, well qualified and offer industry experience within
their subjects. Learning may also be accessible from home via the Google
Education Suite (Google Classroom) and/ or My Dynamic Learning to allow learners
to make progress.
Entry requirements You will be required to
attend an initial assessment at a Community Hub to determine your eligibility
for the course. Your English must also be to a standard that will enable you to
complete any written assignments. If you already have a comparable qualification
at a higher level than the result of the initial assessment, you may not be
eligible to study the course.
You must be aged 19+ on 31 August 2021
to join this course.
Course Delivery This is
a face-to-face classroom-based course with live lessons and set teaching times.
You should be willing to join in with class discussions,
activities and also commit to personal study outside of class times.
In additional to classroom attendance, your tutor will
also set you work on Google Classroom and/ or My Dynamic Learning. You should be
prepared to do at least 2 hours of independent study per week.
You can apply for a loan of a laptop and Wi-Fi access,
subject to availability and eligibility.
You will be expected to complete an Individual Learning
Plan to reflect on your learning and progress.
Attendance & Learning
Assessment Classes run throughout the
week, with different morning, afternoon and evening sessions
available.
You will need to attend your class session on time and
stay for the whole session. You will also need the time and commitment required
to complete any set homework tasks and maintain attendance of at least 90%. The
expected time to complete this course depends on each learner’s starting point
and outcome of the initial assessment. You will be expected to submit work to
agreed deadlines.
You will be internally assessed via the completion of
different tutor assessments, learning journals, tutor observations,
presentations and video recordings. All of which will demonstrate how you are
currently meeting the qualification criteria set by the Awarding Body.
There will be two, one hour, formal examinations for
reading and writing, followed by internally assessed speaking and listening
activities for the higher level qualifications.
You will be expected to undertake all your course
assessments and examinations. A charge may be levied if you fail to complete
your course.

course to ensure this is the right course for you at this

Progression Learners who successfully complete the English Functional Skills
qualification at level 1 may wish to progress onto Functional Skills English at
level 2. The level 2 qualification should provide a foundation for progression
into employment, further or higher education. We have a dedicated Careers and
Employability Coordinator who can support you to plan your next
steps.
Additional information Places on this course are limited. Further courses
will be scheduled throughout the academic year and will operate waiting lists.
We recommend you register your interest early, as this course is very popular.
Costs Maths and English courses are free of
charge to adults who have not previously attained a GCSE grade 4 (C) or
higher.
Also, Essential Digital Skills Qualifications (EDSQs) are
offered free of charge to adults who are assessed at below Level 1.
Covid-19 Health and Safety Our face-to-face
courses take place in COVID-secure venues. As such, we ask our learners and
staff to follow current national and local Government guidance around hand
sanitising, face coverings, room ventilation, lateral flow testing, COVID
vaccinations and social distancing measures.
Face-to-face delivery may need to switch to online
delivery if COVID-19 guidelines change at short notice. Please note that refunds
cannot be given if this situation occurs.
