Content & overview
The purpose of this qualification is to give you the skills to support
colleagues with mental health problems. These skills will be gained by
increasing your knowledge and understanding of mental health conditions, the
principles of mental health first aid and how this can be implemented in the
workplace.
This course is made up of 3 mandatory units:
Unit 1 - Exploring mental health
Unit 2 - Understand how to support individuals with mental ill health
Unit 3 - Understand a mentally healthy environment
You will also learn how to use Google Classroom (email, uploading
coursework and online video conferencing Google Meet)
Attendance and Learning Assessment
The expected time to complete this online course is 12 weeks. You will be
expected to submit work to agreed deadlines and undertake all your course
assessments. There will be no formal exam. A charge may be levied if you fail to
complete your course.
You will be internally assessed via completion of an online portfolio of
evidence demonstrating how you meet the qualification criteria set by the
Awarding Body. This will include tutor assessment of written assignments.
How will this course benefit me?
You will be able to focus on the study of mental health first aid and mental
health advocacy in the workplace. The qualification also offers breadth and
depth of study of mental health first aid.
Course Delivery
You may need to attend a Preparing to Work Online induction session at Ashby
Community Hub where you will be shown how to use Google Classroom. You must have
access to the internet via a suitable device, preferably a laptop or PC, to
enable you to access online learning. You will be issued with an Adult Education
and Community Learning account. You can apply for a loan of a laptop and Wi-Fi
access, subject to availability and eligibility.
Online learning will include tutorials and check-ins with your tutor at a
mutually convenient time. These will take place via telephone or Google Meet.
You will be working from a range of multimedia resources, including website
links and online resources, via Google Classroom. You will be expected to
complete an Individual Learning Plan to reflect on your learning and progress.
There are no live lessons or set teaching times.
You should be prepared to do at least 3 hours of independent study per
week including accessing Google Classroom.

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress onto:
• Level 2 and 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care
• Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia
• Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Working in the Health Sector
• Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care
