As we provide education for adults, this course is available as online distance learning, which allows you to manage your time around work, childcare, etc.

For courses which are delivered face to face, we try to be as flexible as possible, offering some courses in the evening and at different venues, again to help you to continue learning outside of working hours.

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

Content and Overview
Our ESOL courses give you the opportunity to improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. This will help you to apply for a job or improve your job prospects, talk to doctors and teachers, find out about life in the UK, help your children with their homework and engage in the community.
You will also learn how to use computers and you will be able to take a new IT exam at the right level.

Attendance
Classes run regularly during the week as we try to offer different days and times having morning, afternoon and evening sessions at different locations.
You are expected to attend every face-to-face class and online.
You have to be punctual, arrive on time and stay for the full duration of the class. If you have a problem and cannot attend, you have to inform your tutor or contact customer services in advance.

Suitable for
This course is for adult speakers of other languages who wish to learn or improve their English skills.

Delivery Method
You will learn in a small group and you will do speaking and listening activities, such as role-plays and discussions. You will practise your reading and writing skills, improve your vocabulary and pronunciation. You will also use computers and online learning platforms.

Homework
You will be expected to work between 1-2 hours per week on activities at home, including using online platforms such as Google Classroom.

Assessment
Your learning and progress will be checked using many methods – question and answer activities, observation, reading and writing activities. You will receive constructive feedback and time to improve and self-correct your work. There will be set dates throughout the year when you will take Gateway ESOL exams in Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening.

Further Study
There are many learning opportunities with Adult Education and Community Learning. You will receive advice and guidance about other courses and careers. When you complete this course, you can progress onto the next ESOL Entry level, Level 1 or Level 2 or Higher Education courses.

How to Apply
Application followed by an initial assessment and a diagnostic assessment on computer or IPad. You will need to bring with you all documentation: ID, National Insurance Number, proof of benefits, payslips and any certificates for qualifications you have previously done.

Additional Information
You can participate in non-regulated courses if you have a learning difficulty or you need more time to get ready for an exam.
You will also be able to take a new Essential Digital Skills Qualifications in using computers and the internet.
You will need to bring a notepad, an A4 lever arch file and a pen with you.

Applying for a course does not mean you are automatically enrolled. You must be 19+ on 31 August 2023 and UK resident for at least 3 years to be eligible for a funded/part funded course.
