Course Description

** APPLY HERE FOR CLASSES STARTING IN SEPTEMBER 2024. You can apply at any time during the academic year.
Please note: This is also available as Distance Learning and Fast Track options **

English, Maths and Essential Digital Skills courses are all free of charge if you do not already have a GCSE grade 4 (or A*- C grade).

As we provide education for adults, many of the courses we offer have the option of doing some learning from home, which allows you to manage your time around work, childcare, etc.

For courses which are delivered face to face, we try to be as flexible as possible, offering some courses in the evening and at different venues, again to help you to continue learning outside of working hours.
Although we do try to offer courses at various locations, if numbers are low, we may not be able to do this.

* Please note that when you apply for a course, you will not be enrolled onto the course until you have completed the Initial Assessments mentioned below *

Functional Skills Maths Courses

Content and Overview

Do you want to gain confidence in your practical maths skills to perhaps help you at work or to help your children with their homework?
It might be that you need a certain level of maths for further/ higher education or your future career? Then we have a suitable course for you.
Before starting a course, you will need to attend an initial assessment. This will give us the information we need about your skills and abilities and will help us to decide which course and level will be most suitable for you.

Our Functional Skills maths courses will allow you to:

 - learn new ways to do calculations
 - improve your problem solving skills both with and without a calculator
 - understand how to handle information and data by analysing graphs and charts
 - develop your understanding of fractions decimals and percentages

Entry requirements
You will be required to attend an initial assessment at a Community Hub to determine your eligibility for the course. Your English must also be to a standard that will enable you to complete any written mathematical questions. You must also complete an online induction, which includes online safety, before you begin a course with us.
If you already have a comparable qualification at a higher level than the result of the initial assessment, you may not be eligible to study the course.

You must be aged 19+ on 31 August 2024 to join this course.

How will this course benefit me?
All of these skills will allow you to perform better at work and will give you more confidence in everyday numeracy tasks.
You will be able to use your new learning and skills by applying them to a range of formal and informal settings within the workplace and in real life. You will be able to develop your numeracy skills with confidence, effectiveness and with an increasing level of independence.
Our courses are delivered across a range of levels from entry level, right up to level 2.

Attendance and Learning Assessment
You will need to attend your class session on time and stay for the whole session. You will also need the time and commitment required to complete any set homework tasks and maintain attendance of at least 90%. The expected time to complete this course depends on each learner’s starting point and outcome of the initial assessment.  You will be expected to submit work to agreed deadlines.

You will be internally assessed via the completion of different tutor assessments, learning journals, tutor observations, presentations and video recordings. All of which will demonstrate how you are currently meeting the qualification criteria set by the Awarding Body.

There will be two, formal examinations for the higher level qualifications. One is calculator permitted with a duration of one hour and twenty minutes and one is non-calculator, with a duration of twenty-five minutes.

You will be expected to undertake all your course assessments and examinations. A charge may be made if you fail to complete your course.

Course Delivery
We offer different delivery options, including 36 week courses, fast track courses and distance learning courses.

The face-to-face classroom-based courses are live lessons and have set set teaching times.

You should be willing to join in with class discussions, activities and also commit to personal study outside of class times.

In additional to classroom attendance, your tutor will also set you work on Google Classroom. You should be prepared to do at least 2 hours of independent study per week.
You will be expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan to reflect on your learning and progress.

How to Apply
Please click on the "Apply Now" button above. You will then need to complete the online application form, where you can also attach all relevant documentation.
Your application will be followed by an initial assessment and a diagnostic assessment on a computer or iPad.
You will need to bring with you all documentation: ID, National Insurance Number, proof of benefits (if applicable) and any certificates for qualifications you have previously done.

Progression
If you successfully complete the Maths Functional Skills qualification at level 1, you may wish to progress onto Functional Skills Maths at level 2. The level 2 qualification should provide a foundation for progression into employment, further or higher education.  We have a dedicated Careers and Employability Coordinator who can support you to plan your next steps.
