Counselling Skills - Gateway Level 1 Award

Content & Overview:
This qualification is designed as an introduction to counselling skills and development of the skills related to counselling, such as empathy and listening. It is suitable for anyone considering going into work in the counselling sector. This course does not fully qualify you to work as a counsellor but provides a stepping stone onto further learning and gives you your first steps in understanding counselling skills.

This course will cover two units:-

Unit 1 - helps improve knowledge and understanding of counselling, including why people seek counselling, the ways counsellors can help people, what skills counsellors need and how self-awareness and empathy can help.

Unit 2
- looks at counselling skills, including empathy and boundaries. There will be opportunities to apply and practise some of the skills for counselling, including good listening skills.

Suitable for:
This qualification is suitable for anyone who is interested in working in counselling or using counselling skills in other areas of work and want an understanding of counselling skills.

Entry Requirements:
Literacy/IT Skills Recommended
: Especially relevant for distance/online delivery, you’ll need good written English and basic digital skills, with access to a device and internet, to be able to engage with course materials and complete assignments.

Delivery method:
Blended learning consisting of face-to-face teaching plus online homework assignments using Google Classroom resources.

Progression route:
Following achievement of this qualification, you could progress onto Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills.

Additional Information:
You will need to bring a paper and a pen with you. A folder is useful to keep your work in.
